    Meaning

“Ram” comes from the root ram, to delight or rest: the name of the One in whom the yogis rest. Tulsidas calls Ram naam greater than Ram himself, because the name is available to everyone, everywhere, at every moment.

Ram naam is the most widely chanted name in North India. It is said at birth and at death, written in notebooks of Ram naam lekhan, and called out in greeting in every village. The Ramcharitmanas describes the two syllables “Ra” and “Ma” as the two eyes of devotion.

Because the name is so short, it is ideal for high-count sankalps such as 1.25 lakh (125,000) names over a month. This counter keeps an accurate running total across days so you always know how far you have come.
